About the exhibition

With the 65th annual exhibition “Emil Nolde – Painter and Printmaker”, a new perspective was taken on the interaction of artistic techniques: the exhibition dissolved the separation between media and presented works on paper in direct proximity to oil paintings. Whereas paintings, watercolours and prints had often been displayed independently in the past, their direct juxtaposition made clear how Emil Nolde set different techniques into a stimulating dialogue and explored his motifs in numerous variations.

The exhibition took place in the redesigned rooms of the visitor forum. Around 125 exhibits from different areas of his oeuvre and phases of his career presented landscapes, seascapes, flowers and figure compositions. Alongside well-known masterpieces, rarely or never previously exhibited treasures were shown, particularly in the field of colour printmaking. The graphic works documented Nolde’s enthusiasm for artistic experimentation and continual variation of his motifs. They offered insight into his playful approach to exploiting the technical possibilities of etching, woodcut and lithography in order to achieve new colour effects and nuances. In this way, it became evident how closely interconnected the works were across different media, forming a unified whole devoted to the magic of colour.

In 1926, Gustav Schiefler wrote in his catalogue of Nolde’s prints that Emil Nolde saw “the world not in lines, but in colours”. Under this guiding principle, the exhibition invited visitors to rediscover Nolde’s work, particularly through the colouristic qualities of his prints in dialogue with watercolours and paintings.
